Bus passengers using Christchurch High Street are set to enjoy a smoother and safer journey with a new set of improvements aimed at enhancing the bus travel experience.
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council will begin work on 6 January to replace the current bus stops along the High Street with larger, more accessible facilities. Two new stainless-steel shelters, equipped with glass roofs, will be installed on either side of the road. These modern shelters will feature full-width seating, with space for wheelchair users, and raised kerbs for level access, making it easier for passengers to get on and off the bus.
In a bid to improve communication, the new shelters will also be fitted with electronic displays showing real-time bus departure information. For added security, CCTV cameras will be installed, with high-definition footage being live-streamed directly to the Council’s control room.
In addition to these upgrades, the space outside Christchurch Library will see changes designed to improve pedestrian flow. Existing raised brick planters will be replaced with smaller pedestal planters, allowing for a wider pavement and better access for pedestrians. Additional benches will also be installed to enhance the comfort of those waiting at the bus stops.
Councillor Andy Hadley, BCP Council’s Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment, and Energy, shared his enthusiasm for the project: “It’s great to be investing in improving the pedestrian experience in Christchurch High Street, and especially the facilities for bus users. The team has been successful in securing government funding for these changes and has worked closely with Morebus to ensure both passengers and the wider public benefit in this busy shopping area.”
The improvements are part of BCP Council’s successful bid for a government grant of £8.9 million, aimed at delivering the conurbation’s Bus Service Improvement Plan. Scheduled for completion in 12 weeks, the works are planned during the quietest time of the year to minimise disruption to local businesses.
Andrew Wickham, Managing Director of Morebus, expressed his support for the changes: “I’m pleased to see these latest improvements will benefit passengers travelling on our buses through Christchurch. Measures like these are key to making bus travel more attractive and, by encouraging more people to leave their cars at home, we can help reduce congestion in the area.”
Once completed, the new bus stops are expected to be well-received by both commuters and the wider community, with further improvements to public transport in the area anticipated in the future.
