Tower Park’s management has hinted at potential plans to fill the soon-to-be-vacant site after Cineworld closes its doors early next year.
Cineworld, which has faced financial difficulties, is set to shut its Poole branch on 19 January as part of a company-wide restructuring effort. This decision leaves uncertainty around the site’s future, with speculation about whether a new cinema operator might step in and how long the venue will remain unused.
A Tower Park spokesperson confirmed that discussions were held with Cineworld before the closure announcement, aimed at finding a solution.
“We strive to work collaboratively with our partners to ensure the best outcomes for everyone involved,” the spokesperson said. “Since learning of Tower Park Cinema’s inclusion in Cineworld’s restructuring, we’ve been actively engaged in exploring solutions.
“Cinema remains a vital destination for experiencing films in their most exciting and impactful form. By elevating the cinematic experience, we believe guests will continue to be drawn to the magic of the big screen.
“We’re committed to working with top-tier operators to create memorable experiences and look forward to sharing updates on what’s next.”
Decline in Local Cinema Venues
The closure of Cineworld in Poole follows the announcement earlier this year that the Weymouth branch will also shut. In the Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) area, cinema options are now limited to the Odeon in Bournemouth’s BH2 complex and the independent Regent Centre in Christchurch.
Mid Dorset and North Poole MP Vikki Slade described Cineworld’s closure as “a significant loss for Tower Park,” noting that many units in the leisure complex are already empty.
Tower Park’s Cinematic Legacy
Cineworld took over the 16-screen multiplex at Tower Park in 2016 after acquiring it as part of a £94 million nationwide deal. The cinema joined other key attractions such as Splashdown Waterpark and Hollywood Bowl, cementing Tower Park’s status as a leading leisure destination in Poole.
Currently, the complex is undergoing a £2.5 million upgrade, which includes improved pavements, enhanced walkways, high-level decorating, increased greenery, LED lighting, and additional seating. This phased project is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
A Pioneer in Leisure Development
When Tower Park opened in 1989, it was hailed as a revolutionary leisure hub. The site featured a £3 million nightclub, The Venue, and an ice-skating rink, Ice Trax, making it one of Europe’s first developments of its kind. Built on 53 acres of former heathland, it was the brainchild of Bill Riddle, whose company, WH White, was also responsible for a nearby landfill site.
As Tower Park evolves, its management appears determined to maintain its appeal as a premier leisure destination by ensuring the site remains vibrant and relevant to visitors. More details on the next steps for the cinema site are expected to follow soon.
